In 2010, I was invited to attend a local roller derby event at the El Paso County Coliseum. From then until the time I departed for Afghanistan, I was hooked. For nearly three years, I regularly attended and was eventually asked to photograph the Sun City Roller Girls. I would not say I was their official photographer, but it was pretty close. For the street and documentary photographer, roller derby is a great place to hone your skills, experiment, and try different things. The light is usually terrible, but the action and subjects are endless at every bout. If you like people watching, go to the roller derby. One thing was for sure, I loved those ladies! All of the players were awesome subjects who welcomed me with open arms. It was nothing but fun with a bunch of great people. I miss those ladies, I should get in touch for the next season!
